The Truth
Sometimes it is necessary to lie or exaggerate the truth to get the true point across. In the novel the things they carried, O’Brien exaggerates many details to hen make the truth more real and to make the reader feel like he or she is actually there. For example, in the chapter “ambush”, he makes the whole story up about how he killed the man with a grenade and his feelings of how he was shocked in awe of what happened to him and who he was. He was in a situation similar to this but, he made details up making it stand out and to make the reader fell as if you were there. Not only that but it makes the reader into the story. In the video he says that we can leave things out, which isn’t lying. Like if we were telling someone that we had gone into a gas station this morning and got a bag of chips. Took it to the counter and left. What he didn’t tell was that he held up the lady behind the counter and robbed her. Both stories are true but one is leaving out some details. The truth is always changing too, who a person is a year ago isn’t true now.
