Segregation: the separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by enforced or voluntary residence in a restricted area, by barriers to social intercourse, by separate educational facilities, or by other discriminatory means. In this book the secret life of bees, segregation is presented throughout. When Roasleen goes to register to vote with lily three men taunt her and she spills chewing tobacco juice on their shoes because she is angered. she is sent to jail just for doing this innocent crime. These men were taunting Rosaleen because she is black and say that it was wrong for blacks to vote. During this period of time when this book takes place there is civil rights controversy and the time of the Martin Luther King. These men are segregating Rosaleen and making it hard for her to do what she should be let to do. Today there is still segregation. Maybe not to the extent to this but there is. No matter what people say there’s always going to be segregation because one always thinks ones better that another. Today there are people who still hold grudges and dislike certain races. Its horrible thing, but all we can do is lessen segregation.
I think Rosaleen could’ve easily avoided this beating if she simply would’ve ignored the men and just gone to vote. The men would’ve gotten tired after a while and just left her alone. It was her actions that sparked the beating. I mean, if someone poured tobacco juice on your shoes how would you react?
ReplyDeleteI liked your attention getter, but my suggestion would be not to use so much of the definition. There were minor grammar mistakes, but you just need to proofread it. I agree with the fact that segregation exists today. How would you suggest the public "lessen segregation?"
